Abstract

New innovative therapies are urgently needed to combat the high morbidity associated with sickle cell crises. Given the many side effects associated with conventional anti-inflammatories, the use of herbal medicines would be beneficial for patients. In an effort to help manage chronic inflammation in sickle cell disease, a three-herb recipe was used to test the anti-inflammatory activity elicited by Freund's Complete Adjuvent in Wistar rats. Rats' pulp volume and hematological parameters were measured. After the 20 days of treatment, the extracts from the recipe reduced the edema caused by CFA and the proliferation of the number of leukocytes, the level of fibrinogen and also increased the level of hemoglobin which is the key parameter of anemia. These observed effects are due to the antioxidant power of phenolic compounds and alkaloids, the terpenoids present in the extracts of ZHm.
