Abstract
This study investigates the impact of dam building on soil fertility and water quality of surrounding area of Hataikheda Dam Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Bhopal is home to several dams, including Hataikheda, Kolar Dam, Bhadbhada Dam, Halali Dam, Kaliasot & Kerwa Dam, which play a significant role in irrigation, water supply, flood control, and hydroelectric power generation. The study aims to analyze the effects of these dams on the surrounding environment, focusing on soil properties, water quality, and local agricultural productivity with special reference to Hataikheda Dam region. Hataikheda dam constructed in year 1964 has been used for irrigation. The reservoir holds water throughout the year. Data collection involved site visits to the dam, where water and sediment samples were gathered from various locations, including the dam reservoirs, nearby water bodies. Soil samples were collected from areas adjacent to the dam and nearby forests. Microbiological techniques were employed to identify microflora, while biochemical analyses of the soil and water samples were performed to measure parameters such as nitrate, sulfate, phosphate, potassium, pH, and water quality indicators. The results of this study indicate that the presence of dams has both positive and negative effects on the soil and water quality in the region. While dams have contributed to improved irrigation and agricultural productivity, there has been a noticeable decline in soil fertility in some areas due to sedimentation and changes in water composition5 (Burgess, J., & Johnson, A. (2013)). Water quality was also found to be affected by pollutants, changes in water temperature, and increased sedimentation.
